Sun is creating 10 workforce development training centers access South Carolina, with the goal of offering future training sites in neighboring states. With 5 committed centers, we are halfway towards our goals. Each center will focus on the unique heritage offered by the community. Every site doubles as a resiliency hub providing services during disasters.
SUN offers 1-3 week Renewable Energy Installation trainings, making energy jobs available to members of the communities we serve. The first training module is workforce readiness, focused on basic job skills such as resume writing and interview preparation, financial management, and meeting workforce expectations. The next module is an OSHA Safety certification course, needed on all commercial renewable energy installation sites. The goal is for students to have a useful credential for future safe employment. The last module includes solar panel, battery storage and electric vehicle charging station installations. At the conclusion of the program, we will help the trainees with job placement with our EPC’s or solar development partners. If the trainee wants to pursue a formal apprenticeship program with a technical college or university, we will help them to apply and help with potential scholarships.
Our first training is scheduled for Aiken in conjunction with our great community partners. Thank you to The Imani Group, Umoja Village and Second Baptist Church of Aiken for all the work done to bring this training to success. By bringing the students into the trainings, our partners offer members of their communities a pathway to good paying renewable energy jobs.
